It’s that time of the year again! Every January we set goals for ourselves regarding our health. This year will be no different. Men and women across the country will proclaim that they will lose weight, take better care of themselves, stop smoking, exercise more, live life more fully, find a new job, travel more, etc.
What is the difference between those who are able to accomplish their goals or resolutions and those who eventually stumble and, sadly, give up? For some, it’s having an amazing support system to help them achieve their goals. This support system can come in the form of group challenges, family, friends and/or hired professionals. Trying to change your diet so that you can stabilize your blood sugar or lower your cholesterol? Seek out the help of a nutritionist and maybe even join a support group of people who are facing the same kinds of issues. Addressing your mental health? Find a counselor, a close friend, or talk to a doctor. Wanting to change careers? Seek out a business coach to help you tailor that resume toward the jobs that you are seeking.
Why then, do so many people feel like they have to do everything without any help? We are taught from a young age that, “If you want something done right, you have to do it yourself,” and that we have to work hard to get to where we want to be in life. What if we make it more difficult than it needs to be? Focus on not only what it is that you are really wanting to change, but also why you want those changes.
The year 2020 is going to be a year of clarity for so many people. Stop expecting anything less out of the life that you have been given. This year will bring us the clarity we need to see the things that are most important to us. We will cast aside the activities, the things, the people, the ideas, the jobs, the habits that no longer serve us. We will find clarity in what we truly want out of life and will stop at nothing to forge ahead on our journeys … even if that means asking for help!
This sense of clarity will permeate all aspects of our lives as long as we are willing to allow it. We can’t find clarity though, if we keep doing the same things in our lives over and over and then expect a different outcome. Albert Einstein would call this the definition of insanity!
Ask yourself the following questions:
1. What do I want out of this next year?
2. What am I willing to do to achieve my goal?
3. Who can I ask to help me?
4. What will I do if something gets in my way?
