Gong xi fa cai (gōng zi fah ts-eye)! Xin Nian Kuai Le (shing nian koo-eye luh)! Whether you’re wishing “Congratulations on your future fortunes,” or “Happy New Year”, Chinese New Year has best of both. Based on the Lunar calendar, Chinese New Year is also known as the Spring Festival. It’s a celebration of new things to come: the harvest, fortune, luck, all things we look forward to. Think of it as spring cleaning -- out with the old and in with the new!
To bring in the new year, fireworks are lit, a lot of food is made and eaten, and loved ones gather to celebrate together. One of the foods frequently prepared for the holiday is Jiao Zi - Chinese dumplings. More common in northern China, Jiao Zi can have various fillings, though pork and chicken are most common. You can steam, boil, deep fry or pan fry them.
Every year, many Chinese families make dumplings together. The shape of these dumplings holds a tradition for millions of Chinese people all around the world. And what does this have to do with the New Year? Jiao Zi are in the shape of money! An ancient currency made out of gold or precious metals was used long ago, but now this shape represents bringing luck and good fortune.
In this class, we’ll show you how to make everything from scratch. We start with the wrapper, then to the filling, next to the pan, and finally, into our bellies! This is a treat you don’t want to miss.
